British authorities recommend avoiding consumption of raw sprouted seeds

E Coli Deadly

British authorities have recommended avoiding consumption of raw sprouted seeds as a precaution after E. coli illnesses caused by bacteria in France.

.

Germinated seeds "should not be eaten until they have been carefully prepared at high temperatures, and should not be eaten raw," according to a release of the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

FSA recommends "cleanup" of the instruments used in the germination of seeds and "wash hands after contact with seeds."

However, the British agency points out that the UK was not registered any case of disease.

In France, in Bordeaux, there were ten cases of disease, seven patients attending a party where they spent six of the seeds germinated. French authorities said that the seeds were purchased in a shop Jardiland, supplied by British company Thompson & Morgan.

"Although the link between symptoms and consumption of these seeds could not be clearly established" seed was suspended in France.

Several lawmakers have criticized the decision of British authorities in Paris. "If the French were right (...), will be held responsible for what could mean more losses worth thousands of pounds for the British market", already affected by the E.coli outbreak recorded in Europe, said Labour MEP Richard Howitt.
